Flannery O’Connor famously said that anyone who survived childhood has enough material to write for the rest of his life—and I believe personal essays are a terrific medium for sharing those stories. They’re shorter and easier to write than a full book, and they can help you build the platform you’ll need if you aspire to one say get a book contract.
In this class, I am going to teach you:
- What a personal essay is
- How to develop a calendar for writing them
- How to write them, rewrite them, and edit them
- How to send them in on deadline so the rest of us may read them
No one is born knowing this stuff. I had to be taught it, and I was by some of the best magazine editors in the world as I wrote and published for places like The New York Times, The New York Times Health section, the New York Times Science section, The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Good Housekeeping, The New York Daily News, Prevention and many more.
It would be my privilege to share what I know with you.
